Rack & pinion, tie rods or steering column?

So in the interest of not spending oodles of cashing chasing the actual issue here...

I get a distinct clunk that i can hear and feel when i turn and sometimes when i go over bumps coming from my suspension.

I'm on the edge about replacing my rack and pinion and tie rods, but i dont want to drop $$$ thats not needed.

Do any of htese part so fa common issue with this symptom?

Also... if i really crank the wheel for a u turn (like when i get home from work everyday and park in front of the house) about halfway through the turn, it jerks and a bit and my old bald tires would squeal. anything?

thanks!!

I'd be checking the ball joints.

Ball joints. Also check your stabilizer bar end link bushings, if they are shot they will make a clunking sound.

What was the problem? I get that clunk and one of the stabilizer bar links looks awry.

I've posted this before and some of you may think I'm crazy, but here goes anyway.

I also had the clunk that I could feel and hear whenever I turned the wheel or hit a bump. I also tried to localize it down to anything and everything in the front suspension or ball joints. Turned out, it was my horn plate INSIDE the steering wheel. It is held in place by 3 rubber standoffs which deteriorate over time. (This is for the 91-94 Exploders. Don't know about later years).

When just 1 breaks, its just a little clunk. When 2 break, it's a bunch of clunks. Super Glue fixed the job overnight. No more clunks. I know it sounds silly, but I chased this down for over 5 years. Go figure.

Hope it helps someone.
