1996 Bronco tailgate window: This subject has been posted a number of times, but I can't find what I need. With the window stuck in the down position, how do I access the "safety switch", which I believe is the problem... The window works fine unless lowered all the way, so both the dash and key switch seem ok, and the motor is ok. Can I get to the safety switch without taking the glass out.
These pics show where the switch is, and you don't need to remove the glass. It's attached to the driver's latch. I showed it on the center mechanism too, but that was only on older Broncos.
The switch shouldn't be affected by the position of the glass (that's just the center mechanism & inside handle), so I doubt that's your problem. To check, just FULLY close the driver's latch with the t/g open and see if the motor works. Be sure to OPEN the latch fully before trying to close the t/g.
You will have to raise the window to get to any parts thru the access panel. Check your tailgate latches and the strikers. If the gate is not closed securely, the window may not operate. It sometimes takes a good "slam" to shut the gate and get my window to work.
Thanks, I ordered the pics, but will have to drive around with the window open til they get here.
In the meantime, I tried closing the driver's latch, still no go. but I have had this problem 3 or 4 times before. Once I can get it to go up, it works fine until I lower it all the way again, so I am sure it is the "safety switch". I figured if I could get to the switch, I could just bypass it until I could replace it, but I can't get to it from the access panel since it is outside (behind) the window. I considered taking the entire latch off, maybe I'll try that tomorrow.

When I have my firewall turned on those pics won't show up but when I turn it off they show up just fine....it took me awhile to figure that one out.........keep trying....you'll get em'
I had this problem just today only 2 hours ago. You can access the switch with the window down but its not easy you may want to find someone with small hands. What I did was pull the black connector out of the switch (White) and jumped it with a paper clip then closed the gate and rolled it up. Then I cut the connector off and put a wire nut on. I was not in the mood to even try to fix the switch especially in that cramped spot. The switch is on the back side of the drive side latch.
Send me a real e-mail & I'll attach the original (big) pics. You can get an e-mail to me by searching the classifieds for "Steve83". Just be sure to specify what you want - I won't remember.
Steve's got some good pics, so get those, but do what screwy says. Take the panel off, then find the two-wire connector on the driver side by the latch that goes into a white switch. Remove the connector and short it out with a paperclip or something else. That should take care of your problem. It will also allow you to roll the window up with the tailgate down; just be smart and don't do that unless you've got a real reason.
Any ideas of what to do about a tailgate that wont open? I lift the latch from the inside because the window won't go down, but nothing happens, no amount of force seems to open it. The tailgate doens't look properly closed so i figured that was the reason the window won't go down. Any ideas?
