Oil bath air filter replacement

I just bought a 1975 F250 with a 390 engine. It has an oil bath air filter system. Should I keep this or change over to a paper filter? If change, how do I go about making the switch? If keep, what is the proper maintenance routine and where do i buy a new filter? I've got a shop manual, but it just has the modern air filter system.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

It's an oil bath so the oil is the filter. There should be a level line inside; just keep it between the lines. It won't need much attention if you on the pavement. Off road rock climbing? Well that's a different story; probably not good for that application.

These are best for dusty road/area use. The more dust, the more often you change the oil; same oil as you motor uses.

I have one but since my travels are mostly on pavement it sits on a shelf...

Keep the oil bath filter if ya live in a dusty/rural area.

The oil bath's filter media is not changed (it looks like hay)... you change its oil! Simply dump out the old oil (recycle!) and fill 'er up with the cheapest brand ya can find. You can swish the new oil around and repeat the process but it is usually not needed.

Changing to a paper type element is simple. Get an open element air cleaner and a 14x3 paper or K&N (or equivalent) and install. The air cleaner housing kit typically comes with a fitting so the crankcase breather on the driver's side valve cover can be connected to source pre-filtered air.

Oh, the open element is worth a few HP.
