Hi folk's,
For about 2 weeks my truck sound's like someone is wailing it with a sledge hammer when turning left. Sound is coming from the back.
I jacked the rear axle up, and tried wiggling the wheels, but they are tight.
Checked the Exhaust system, tight. Checked the ball joint's, and front wheel bearings...,tight. Checked leaf springs, shocks, and bushings, they are tight.
I did find a loose U joint on the front right axle, Could that be it?
I am leaning towards a rear wheel bearing, but.....
2006 F250 Crew Cab, Short Bed, PSD.
Trac bar seems tight, steering seems tight.
I have been (not since I heard the noise) cutting and hauling firewood, and admittedly, load it good. But no worse than I ever loaded my F150's, so these loads should be child's play for this truck.
Any Idea's? Anyone else have this problem? Any Idea's what I should look at, or maybe something off the wall?
Try locking the front hubs (manually) and doing u-turns on dry pavement (in 2WD) and see how bad your front u-joints really are. Also, if the noise happens at slow speeds, have someone else drive it while you stand outside and listen (in whatever 2wd/4wd mode it happens in)
Will do! I think I am gonna ride in the bed, and have the wife drive. If it ever quits raining.
I never tried 4 wheel drive to see if it got better or worse.
Mine does it when I turn right , I think in my case my rear end limited slip clutches are sticking and I need more Limited slip additive, might be your problem as well ?
I would see if you can pinpoint it by riding in the box and listening, if it sounds like its coming from the differential I would add some more the stuff is fairly cheap so you wont be out much to try it. Worse case scenario is your already basically worthless limited slip is a little more worthless..
Wouldn't it be driving like it was locked if the clutches were sticking?
When you are going straight the wheels are turning at the same speed so you wouldnt notice if the clutches were locked or sticking, when you turn a corner the wheels have to turn at different speeds so the clutches need to slip. If you are sticking you will get a thumbing noise as they release and relock.
Have you changed the ATF fluid in the Transfere-case ?
Could be an issue in it,,changing the fluid is cheap ins,,,like 2 qts of atf,,and also get a look at the fluid that comes out,,,hopefully no chunks, chips and metal shavings come out !!
Well I think the rear end is dickered. Added another jug of fluid and added 10 oz of diff slip, the hammering sound calmed down a little, but there is a grinding noise yet.
When I changed it last year, I put 4 bottles in (I think they are a quart) and 8 oz of limited slip stuff. I swear I filled it till it ran out the hole. Today I added 10 oz of friction modifier, and another quart of gear lube.
How much diff fluid does it take?
It has a tiny bit of seepage on the top bolts of the cover, but not wet, and no drip's.
Think the Pig bearings are shot, or just the wheel bearings?
