Most of the lettered company signs from the '50's have more of a flourish, instead of all block letters. Even if you changed the "JUNK" to "===== JUNK =====" (imagine a better font) it would give it more appeal. "Junk" seems kind of harsh, too, couldn't you change that to something more automotive? Not sure people will get the Sanford & Sons reference.
Ilya ,am not familiar with CA. laws .Maybe with the signage you could use the truck for a tax advertising right off .One is always losing money on junk !
Also some business cards with your correct pronuciation on them . You know they will ask how do you pronounce your last name .

I'm going more after the style of the Sanford and Son logo. Since she'll be hand-painting the sign, I'm sure that the letter will have a bit more of a curve to them. I agree that JUNK does look a bit harsh, but I think that adding "2nd Hand Antiques" instead will make the sign too wordy and busy. I've been meaning to ask her to add some decorative lines or scroll type design at the bottom of the sign to close it up.
I think that those that know Sanford and Son should get the reference.
Black drop shadow would have been what most sign painters in the day would have used, especially if it was a "cheap" job. Junkies sure wouldn't have spent extra money for a "fancy" job.
Again, great points, Mike. I've emailed her with your color scheme and also a slight design change that I made. I want to see the design with your colors on the whole truck picture. Let's see what she comes up with.
Here ya go with the original design:
Sounds like many folks prefer the black drop shadows for the lettering. As I wasn't there in the 1950s I certainly don't know what would be the most period correct color scheme. I did, however find a website with LOTS of reproduction signage from the 20's to the 50's (for model RR sets) if you're still looking for inspiration:
I think that will look good on your panel! My son is almost 8 and he loves going to places with me, Last swap meet we went to he scored more great finds than me... he was having a blast.
BTW I didn't know who Sanford and Sons were until hearing it here on FTE back in 2004 ish!
Yes, that's probably mostly because I grew up under a rock! Custer SD and we didn't have a TV so I must have missed out on those shows? of course I may have lived that in reality as well, My Grandpa had easily 80 acres of junk yard in the hills. what a fun place for kids to play, found lots of really cool magazines and matches in the old cars/trucks...
Of course maybe that was on before my time anyway??? I don't think I'm older than Ilya? my dob is 77.
when was Sanford and Sons on TV anyway?
Ilya, I like the "honk for Junk" Idea.
Put a little asterisk after "Junk" so on your cards (or?) you can put the asterisk on the bottom and list the generics of what "junk" means to you??
da^^ !!!!!!!!! flashback !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! criminy redd foxx still alive ????????? go green ......... i'm partial to it myself ............... too bad you weren't here i couldv'e given you some junk ............ some sbc parts from the days of dirt tracking ......... gave 'em too my neighbor instead .......... i broke out in a rash when i found them ........... a victor jr. intake , a new set of solid lifters , and a slightly used comp bumpstick , all in a box in the attic hiding a waitin' to give me nightmares someday !!!!! if i ever bring myself to part the 95 bird i'll have some more to haul off if ya happen to be up this way ...........................
I was trying to get the Panel ready to drive to a local swap meet on Sunday at which I will sell some items, but sadly, the truck is not in good mechanical shape to make it there.
I'm still glad I was able to get this lettering done. It will now inspire me to drive more once the mechanical issues are resolved.
I'm extremely happy with how well it turned out. The lady that did this is a true artist. It only took her 6 hours to do the whole truck. She even mixed/matched the two tone green paint and gave me two bottles to touch up the truck.
