I need help with my dash lights. I have a 1975 F100 XLT. The dash lights do not work when the headlights are cut on, but, when the the light **** is turned to the left (turns on the interior dome light), the dash lights cut on. Any ideas of the problem. I was thinking of just replacing the light switch, but, decided to check here first. This is my first time posting on the forum, but, have been lurking for about three weeks since I purchased my truck. I appreciate any help.
You're on the right track. If the dash lights are able to come on at all with the headlight switch, then you've proven out the dash light wiring, fuse, instrument panel, and bulbs. I would go ahead and replace the switch. The rheostat in the switch wears out over time and what you're seeing is very common.
Was this all of you dash lights or only the instrument cluster? I noticed a similar if not the same thing on my project truck when parking it last Friday. I didnt think to turn the interior lights on with the switch though. I have lights on those switches and on the heater controls but none on the instrument cluster. I have to check the switch next time I go up to work on it (90 miles away at my parents house).
