What is the difference between

a Liberal and a Socialist?

The locals are trying to legalize Mary Jane and outlaw cigarette smoking in two different bills. I can hardly keep up with this stuff.

What is the difference between

think of it this way

Liberal = Socialism i.e. everyone is equal

Conservative = Fascism i.e. people that work hard deserve credit and I'll be damned if you get 7 more chances.

Remember: liberals with socialist leanings call themselves "progressives." Keep an eye out for it.

A liberal is someone that would like to change the way things are run, in order to compensate for new situations and ideas that arise in our society.
Whereas, a conservative would tend to leave things as they are.
A socialist will try to pass laws that place all people on equal ground. Raise the standard of living for the impoverished and meek, while taking advantage of the strong and successful people to meet the previous goal. Example: Successful and rich people in some European socialist countries are heavily taxed to support a large welfare system; i.e. take from the rich and give to the poor. A socialist gov't tries to provide all citizens free or low-cost healthcare. In that scenario, we would all be able to see a Doctor at any time we need to. The people that are working, and producing an income would be taxed in order to provide healthcare for those who can't work.

I think that the pro-Mary Jane people are probably liberals and the anti-smoking people are most likely socialists.

The liberals have seen that smoking pot is not going to destroy the world, and they would like to tax those that wish to indulge.
The socialists see cigarette smoking as a terrible burden on our healthcare system; Many people are under the impression that smoking causes all cancer and heart disease. If smoking were banned, it would ease the stress on our healthcare system and vast sums of money could be diverted to other worthwhile causes, such as Multiple Scelerosis, birth defects, etc. etc.
I think that your local gov't has the same problem the rest of the world's politicians and leaders have, which is, flip-flop disease!!!
Too many leaders are sitting on the fence, and you can't tell what they will do next. It makes it very difficult for a voter to pick a conservative, liberal, socialist, reublican or democrat because they keep changing their stripes as they choose.

Actually legalization of pot is more of a Libertarian stance not a "Liberal" stance. Liberalism is a belief that the people need to be "protected" from themselves, and that the government should provide everything that we need and pay the bill too. A Liberal can be either a republican, democrat or libertarian. Although most republicans tend to be more conservative. Libertarians believe that the government should stay out of our lives in general. Many things that are illlegal should be legalized, however the government should not be responsible for taking care of the people that refuse to take care of themselves.

There is no such thing as free health care. The government would simply raise taxes to cover the expense of this system. We would then be stuck with a poorly run government program of which we currently have too many.
Name one program that the government runs efficiently and successfully.
Healthcare is an expense that needs to be budgeted for individually.
There already exists programs for the healthcare of individuals that cannot provide for themselves.
I personally do not want the government telling me which doctor to see and when I need to see them. That is why I choose to pay for health insurance. I know it is expensive, but the alternative is worse.

Another thing on "free or low cost" "healthcare" I say that because when you give up paying for it, you give up the quality. Take a look at cuba and china. In China they are executing people that have the SARS virus. Why, because the government can not afford to treat the millions of patients that have symptoms.

Since you mention those countries and all the Socialist countries in my mind, both past and present, has there EVER been a sucessful Socialist country? I can't think of one. Why do we have so many people leaning that way in this country?

I don't think that there are alot of people leaning towards socialism. I think it's the squeeky wheel gets the grease scenario. They are simply the loudest and most outspoken so it seems that there are more of them. Not to mention they control the media, so it just appears that there are more of them.

Sweden taht is the only truelly effective Socialist government. Sociallism is a cross between a democracy and Communism, communism is the perfect government, on paper, it is good until you fact or in human desire, the fact that you watn more then your neighbor has, and the fact that one job is more important than another so you should recieve more, when you don't it creates conflicts, a democracy with free enterprse is the closest to the perfect form of government achievable, the only one that can come close is sociallism, but it is ard to get it to work, that is why I say Swededn is the only succesful socialist country. And the mantain it with very strict immigration laws. They do not like to let outsiders in except for tourism.
