Ok,i have my ol 89 dodge 3/4 ton 2wd...it has the horrible 360 gasser...
im working on doing a engine swap on my cc...in the end i will have an extra powerstroke and coming up with a e4od should not be hateful to come by...
i was thinking of doing a 4bengine cummins swap for mileage but am i stupid for thinking i need to get the tape measure out? Haha i am INSANE!
I wouldn't call it stupid, but you would end up with a package that probably wouldnt appeal to many people. I would go to great lengths to avoid installing an E4OD. Just about any other transmission would be my preference, but to each his own.
If mileage was the goal, I would sell the Dodge and buy a Ranger then do your 4BT swap. I have personally talked to a guy who has done several of these and says they get between 40 and 50 MPG once they're done.
Swapping the PSD into the Dodge would mean you would have to swap all the Ford wiring into it as well to make it work. Sounds like a lot of work to me. Easy thing about a 4BT is it is all mechanical so the wiring is super simple.
Well, selling is not an option. My dad bought it new and now i have it.he will disown me for selling it.this is a project to make an otherwise pig of a truck an affordable means of transportation.i want a 4bdrop but the dang things must be made of gold.we had two and sold them and now i have decided i need to make this thing driveable and am kicking myself.im not afraid of the work and i wont really want a stick.i much prefer an auto and despise the zf behind a powerstroke.in the 90s and early 2k's i replaced STACKS of dm flywheels and just hate them so bad i wont have one,if i see a stick obs i dont keep looking once i see that shifter.period.haha
I dont think the powerstroke even in a light truck will do well enough to warrant the swap...what is the absolute best 2wd mileage anyone has seen?
im just kicking the idea around at this time.thanks for the opinions!
Yeah if the truck has sentimental value then selling it won't do! The best I have heard of (and I haven't verified the numbers to be legit) is mid 20's out of a PSD. Heck, why not pick up an old IDI. If you're not looking for a tire scorcher, it would be a good way to go. Mid 20s can be done with an IDI and lately there are a couple of guys that are pushing the performance envelope with their IDI trucks too. Getting 350+ RWHP and 700+ RWTQ out of their 7.3 IDI with turbos. The IDI is a lot like a CTD in that it will run off one wire to the fuel cutoff. All mechanical, easy and cheap to maintain and you can get them around here for little or nothing. I saw one on CL yesterday for $100 and it was mostly complete.
Heck if you didn't want to mess with the electronics and make the swap really easy, put a higher ratio rear gearset in the truck and run a C6 instead of using an E4OD. You won't have OD but if you're not towing with it the higher rear end ratio would give you a decent final drive ratio. Shoot selling your extra PSD would probably almost fund the project. It would be a fun project too since you would be trying something no one has ever (to my knowledge) done before.
I sold a 6.the frames cracked with them. not that the pstroke wouldnt.
problem with selling my pstroke is it will have 400k when i pull it so it not worth much to antone but me.
Actually the 4b costs much more.look on fleabay.stupid high.just sold one for 500 and another for 1200...now i cant find one for less than twice the 1200..im not in a hurry just going to work on a plan of action.
I can get you a running driving '89 F250 7.3 IDI, automatic 4x4, for $2000. It's not a real bad looking truck either. I think it may need GPs, but it runs good. It belongs to a guy I work with. If you wanna buy it, I'll deliver it just to come out and say HI! LOL!!
I would but my budjet is too tight right now.kinda wanting to keep the project cheeeep.if i could find the harnesses i would do the pstroke honestly.the wiring does not scare me.besides that would make the cummins guys mad haha.and since im a die hard ford guy it would make me just a bit happier since its a dodge and all.
Especially them "powerstroke" emblems. Im actually kinda getting to thinking seriously.it will be a while since i have thousands of dollars in parts to get the swap done on clifford. The tape measure will be out tomorrow!
