Well as many of you know already about my 88 F250 4x4 I have this sudden urge to want to swap over to a ZF 6 Speed trans over the ZF S5-42 5 speed.
Have any of you done this swap and what does it involve when working with the 7.3 IDI diesel?
the way it looks, it looks like it might be as simple as just removing the trans Adapter from the back of the 7.3 idi..... the 6speed I am looking at came out of a 2007 superduty with the 6.0
The Zf6 bolts on a lil different so you would need to make an adapter for it. Iirc the flywheel also needs machined a bit too. Also I have seen a full detailed writeup over at TDS. That might be something you should look up a well.

Perhaps you could get me a link...

What cooler and Lines???? I was unaware the ZF6 had an external cooler setup.....
I doubt you'll have issues though. The lines should just be a matter of routing properly, and a cooler is usually pretty small compared to a radiator or condenser.
I think the input shaft of the trans has to be machined down some also, but dont quote me. Their was a full writeup on what all is involved posted a while back
Also need to swap the transfer case for the one a ZF6 uses.
Also need to figure out the speedometer as ZF6 and transfer case are meant for trucks that have electronic speedometers, not the manual ones in our older trucks.
I'd like to as well, it would be nice to have the extra gear in there while towing, and the shift pattern for reverse and first lends itself well for maneuvering into a tight place with a trailer. But its mostly a dream as I don't have the money.

as far as the Transfer case goes.... if the ZF6 uses a BW 1356 (I think that's what my 88F250 has behind the S5-42) 1 theoretically could take the Input hub out of the newer T/C and put it in the older Mechanical T/C, The inner workings would/should all be the same... that would compensate for the lack of Speedo cable provisions...

Not even close.... 30 seconds of googling found this:
Re: Transfer case behind the ZF6
The manual shift version is the NV271, the ESOF version is the NV273.
Like I said, you need to figure something else out. The ZF6 is bigger at both ends. There has been quite abit posted about this swap all over the place, so settle down with google, or your favorite search engine and see whats already been done.

News to me... I was always under the impression that Newventure products were almost exclusive to the Mopar lines... and some of the Heavy truck and Military Apps
Wide ratio ZF 5 and a gear vendor overdrive would be a whole heck of a lot easier and probably cheaper. Of course if you go wide range ZF you will probably want at least 4.10 axle gears do you can start out in 2nd. I'm thinking the ZF 6 is not a great match with 3.55's either ... too tall to start out in 2nd, 1st would be annoyingly low.

I did forget to mention the 39" tall tires I am running... Low gear is a normal gear to me ROFL
