I know this has been discussed to death!! But, I can't find exactly what I'm looking for as far as info goes. I'm looking at a new F450 4x4. I have a horse trailer that weights around 28,000lbs loaded. I know I probably need to get the actual nose weight of trailer, but my question is should I even be considering a F450 for this heavy of a trailer or should I be looking bigger? What about getting a trailer that size stopped? The Ford's don't have what I would consider an actual exhaust brake. Is anyone out there hauling a trailer this big with a new F450?? I'm looking for actual experience!! Thanks!!!!
I have done that with a F350 many times. Just make sure your trailer brakes are in good working order. Air bags helped the 350 out quite a bit but i dont think the 450 would have a problem with that at all. I usually tip the scales at around that once a month or so hauling cattle across the south. just remember that when you over load the truck you will have to repair it more than some one who doesnt. just my 2 cents
I've got a 2011 F-450, the fiver weighs 21,000 lbs with 4,000 lbs of pin weight. I had to put airbags on it.
Previously, I towed the same weight with an F-350 and was about 3,000 lbs over gross. There's a comfort factor there and that much over the ratings exceeds the comfort factor - I wondered what was going to break first, I couldn't maintain freeway speed on the smallest hills.
Go bigger!
