I have a 1989 Ranger that seems to have an intermittent starting problem that I cant seem to pin down. What is happening is that it will run fine for long (or short) periods of time then all of a sudden it doesnt want to start. The engine will turn over, but just wont start. The last time it happened was after having been run for quite some time. We pulled into the gas station, filled up and it didnt want to start. We got it pushed out of the pumps and tried to get it started over several hours. We went back the next morning and it started. It is intermittent, however. Sometimes it will start right up and other times you have to wait most of the day. It has a 2.9 with fuel injection and electrical fuel pump. The only thing that has recently changed is the automatic transmission was rebuilt 3 days before the problems began. Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

I would check the electrical connections at the secondary pump in the frame rail, and other connections around the trans, even around the upper bell bolts. if that doesnt work, remove both battery cables for about 10 min to reset the computer.
Thanks for the advice. I checked everything and it all looked good. Finally broke down and took it to a repair shop. He was not able to pinpoint the problem either. He did a complete tune up, found that distributor cap was bad. After $279.00 we got the pickup back. Drove it 7 miles parked it and found same problem still there. It is now sitting in the Walmart parking lot! Is it possible for the electric fuel pump to overheat and shut down until it has completely cooled down. How hard is it to get to it? Any other thoughts?
It just appears that it is something that is overheating and tripping. The repair shop didn't drive it but had it running for a period of time and couldnt duplicate the problem.
Thanx again!

Had the same problem with my 86 ford ranger 2.9 Liter fuel Injected,
I found the problem was in my tank,,they use a short rubber hose to conect your fuel pump to the line out,,my problem was the hose would get hot and close up.
I fixed it by cutting off the heel of a spent 357 mag shell and slideing it in the hose between the two metel pipes...
hope it helps,,,did the trik for me,,6 months and still rideing!!
Just want to thank everyone for the suggestions! Also to update you. The mechanic finally found the problem was in the in tank fuel pump. He pulled the gas tank and replaced the pump. Now going on 3 weeks and no further problems!
