i just bought a 1997 f250 heavy duty diesel with 287000 mi on it for $5000. was that a fair price and is there any weird problems with that model? i am an arborist and pull heavy trailers a lot so i took a chance.
thanks
Auto can be a weak link, depending on if its original yet, and previous maintence. Also with that mileage, if the injectors haven't had work, they may need some in the near future. Only way to tell is drive it and see how it is. That's still not a bad price though.
Whether or not its a fair price depends on maintenance and condition. I wouldn't hesitate paying that for a well maintained truck in good condition. The trans is the short coming of these trucks. If its the original and you tow heavy, save your pennies. Your going to want to do some investigating on this truck. Change all the fluids. Make sure you use a good diesel rated oil, test the coolant and make sure the proper additives are present, check your brakes, and steering components. Another good thing to look at is, while the truck is running, flip the oil fill cap upside down over the fill hole. Does it blow off or just kind of rattle and slide off? Check the turbo fins. Are they sand blasted and chipped? Does it have any in/out play? Test your glowpugs and glowplug relay. Look for soot on the firewall. I'm sure I'm missing something. This should keep you busy for a bit.
