V10 Maintenance Costs?

Hey all, this is my first post. I have been "lurking" for a little while now. I've been looking at an 01' F-250 with....55,000 miles. No Joke!! I've grown up around trucks, country boy at heart. I've always had to borrow my dad's until now (hopefully). I work at a Ford dealership and I've been looking for a truck and I think this one will work great and the money is right.

I know I need to do basic maintenance, oil changes, brakes, the usual stuff. But how is the V10 as far as other things go? I'm not a gear head but I can do some basic stuff myself and I'm not afraid to try things and get my hands dirty. Is this going to be a motor and truck I can trust to "set it and forget it" so to speak? I'd rather not be working on a truck all the time and want to trust it with my wife and kid inside in cold Idaho winters.

Thanks for the good info I've already gotten from some of you! If I end up buying it, I'll post up pics of my new hunting, fishing, and trailer towing rig!

Honestly most of your basic maintenance will be a piece of cake. Even with the large engine there's still a decent amount of room and parts are relatively inexpensive.

Gas and oil are only things which will reoccur. Check the header bolts/manifold bolts. Should be popping off by now, miles or not. Unless already fixed by previous owner. Also front hubs, 4x4 will quit when the wheel seals give it up and the vacuum cant pull. Nothing bad there, but probably need to pay a professional for both problems. Unless you got a buddy mechanic. In that case they can both be done at home.

I just bought a 2000 F250 Super Duty Crew Cab 4X4 V10 from a Hutto Texas dealership via the internet. Got it in yesterday and with only 58,000 miles on it, it runs great. As far as maintenance, it appears to be easier than my wife's previous 1999 Expedition and somewhat easier than her 2007 EL. I've dug around under the hood and it looks like I can reach everything. As far as the engine itself, all I've ever had to do was replace the COPs (coil on plugs) and the regular stuff that wears out over time. I don't think you'll be sorry with that purchase unless something is REALLY wrong with it. Do a Carfax, request an Oasis report from the dealer and ask for a diagnostic report. Do a test drive and make your decision from there.
By the way, what are the specs on the one you are looking at? Mine had a Banks Power Pack system installed already. I looked it up and thats a $2100 package from Summit Racing.

Thanks for the replies! We took the truck home last night and decided that wasn't the one we wanted. It's all good though, the right truck will come along soon enough. Until then the old Jeep Cherokee will continue to take me hunting. Thanks again guys!!
