4WD operation question

Gurus,

This may sound like a dumb question, but not knowing is really annoying me.

I live with and drive on snowy and icy roads a little more than 6 months out of the year. Many times when I'm rolling to a stop at a slick intersection, I'll click it into 4WD so I take off better when the light turns green.

Many more times than not though, when I step on the gas, one of my rear tires breaks free and just spins away. Does this mean my 4WD is not actually working right?

How are you so sure that one of the front tires isn't breaking free at the same time?

Well you make a good point, I'm not sure of that, but most of the time I start a giant fish-tail unless I let off the gas right away, which I have always interpreted as the front tires not doing any pulling.

What dial positions does a 2001 have on the 4wd selector dial? Are you clicking it to A4WD or 4Hi?

The lowest setting for mine is A4WD, so I'm going from there to 4 HI.

That happens if you have a posi rear end in the vehicle, regardless of what the front is doing. With a posi, both rear tire will break traction so there's nothing holding the rear straight and it will 'float'. The front has a standard differential, so only one tire will break traction and the other will keep the front from going side to side.
