I live in the Piedmont of NC so we have rolling hills in every direction. Mountain camping is one of my favorite things to do so I go as often as I can. I already have my next trip planned to the Grand Father Mountain area over Thanksgiving. We go every year to get our Christmas tree. The mountains in that area are steeper than anything I've tried so far with this combo.

It sounds as though this is something I should seriously consider. Would it be wise to get new gears installed or should I look at local yards and try to find an axle from a donor vehicle? Am I right in thinking I will need to do both the front and the rear since I have 4x4? Then there is the task of finding someone who knows what they're doing. I have an independent shop run by two Ford certified mechanics that do all of my work and are really great, reasonably priced and knowledgeable guys but I don't know their level of knowledge with gearing.

Yep,, both front and rear,,, best bet is find a 4 Wheel Parts around you,, they usually have a gear guy, and have warranty on their parts and labor,, OR look for a wrecked Ex 4x4 with 4.30's,,,, and swap axles,,,, but me,, I would go with new,,, just for piece of mind,, if they don't do it,, they should know a reputable place that does.

Agreed. Besides, you never know what you are getting with wrecking yard parts. Maybe good, maybe not. By installing new gears in yours you start with a known good unit.

I spent weeks looking for an Ex with factory 4.30 gears when I was in the market. It was time well spent. I love my V10 w/4.30 gears almost as much as good bourbon.
