Do larger gears make a difference

How often do you tow in the mtns?? I live in the mtns. and regeared my 66 F100,, just jumping to 3.70's made a HUGE difference,,, and my mileage increased, due to not working as hard and not having to have my foot in it,,, my 77 is next,, so I would highly recommend it,, you WILL notice it!!
It sounds as though this is something I should seriously consider. Would it be wise to get new gears installed or should I look at local yards and try to find an axle from a donor vehicle? Am I right in thinking I will need to do both the front and the rear since I have 4x4? Then there is the task of finding someone who knows what they're doing. I have an independent shop run by two Ford certified mechanics that do all of my work and are really great, reasonably priced and knowledgeable guys but I don't know their level of knowledge with gearing.

Yep,, both front and rear,,, best bet is find a 4 Wheel Parts around you,, they usually have a gear guy, and have warranty on their parts and labor,, OR look for a wrecked Ex 4x4 with 4.30's,,,, and swap axles,,,, but me,, I would go with new,,, just for piece of mind,, if they don't do it,, they should know a reputable place that does.

Agreed. Besides, you never know what you are getting with wrecking yard parts. Maybe good, maybe not. By installing new gears in yours you start with a known good unit.
