Here's a tough one !

I own a 1986 F-250 6.9 diesel with a C-6 auto transmission that has a worn ring gear.

I am not an expert so is it possible to change only the ring gear or do I have to change the whole flywheel assembly?

Some say to just change the ring gear ( heat up and knock off the old one) and some say that on the diesels the ring is welded to the flywheel?

Which is correct???

Thanks,
Mike

i just looked at the flywheel i have in the shed that is off an '86 6.9/automatic truck, and there are no welds, it's a press fit, heat it up like you were going to.

Just heat the old ring gear off, this is pretty easy. Take the new one and ask your wife if you can use the oven, throw that dude in there and crank the heat. Take your fly wheel and put it in the deep freeze for about a half an hour. They go together a lot easier when you do this.
