2000 4 door 4x4 Super Duty PowerStroke pick up truck. Has about 60,000 miles on it. It plows snow. It goes through a set of Ford "manual" hubs every year. When we plow we always have the hubs in "lock." For the entire winter for that matter.
The dealer has replaced the hubs under warranty every time, always saying, "It's just a bad design." When they start to go bad you can hear them bind and click in 2 wheel drive when turning sharp into the driveway for example. Are there aftermarket hubs that will replace these that are any better? I don't care if I have the "automatic" option, I just want some that last. Any suggestions?
I am ready for a new set, Ford will put them on, but the next time I am going to be this guy -->
Sounds kinda fishy. I lock my hubs in at the first snow fall, which is usually around the end of September, and leave them in all winter. I haven't had any problems with them at all. I have 33,000 miles and 3 arctic winters on them. I however, don't plow with my truck.
Yeah mine are clicking and droning down the road in a frequency that is proportionate to wheel speed. Also, the right side hub is hard to turn. I have an extended warranty but do you all think Ford will honor it with the mods I have?
They should, unless the mods you have done can be linked to the hubs going bad. Emphasis on the should. For example if you have and aftermarked exhaust or air filter, well what would that have to do with the hubs crapping out?
That being said, what kind of mods could affect the hubs. X-large tires or something?
