Here's the problem - occasionally when I go to start my truck, the relay will click, but the starter won't engage. If I crawl under the truck and wiggle a wire that is on the passenger side on the front of the starter, she'll crank right over when I try again. Will replacing this wire solve the problem? I can't really see where this wire goes - does it go directly to the relay?
I am thinking about putting a new starter in because it's the orginal on this '94 f150. When I do this, should I replace the negative battery cable as well?
Here's another question - the negative cable looks like it goes to the block and then a wire comes from the block to the starter. Is this right or does the cable go directly the starter? It is kind of tight in there and the wires are bundled together with tape and I can't tell for sure what the deal is.
There can be little weird things that happen under there.
Cables can heat up then fail later.
Sometimes the terminal on the starter loosens up from being over-tightened.
I would suggest removing the starter & inspecting it and the cables closely.
Besides being the battery cable that attaches to the starter, there is a small (about 1/8 or so diameter) wire that comes out and attaches to the front of the starter on a flat tab. The cheap plastic connector on this wire that snaps onto this tab is cracked and no longer snaps into place making a secure connection. The only problem is it's pretty tight in there and I'm not really sure of the size/type of connector to use. Changing it should be as easy as pulling the old one off and crimping a new one onto the wire (I hope). Anybody else ever have this problem? ('94 F150, 351)
