axle rates vs gvwr
i own a Layton fifth wheel camper and in the process of changing the brake, i had to look at the axles to get the right brakes, this is when i noticed the axles were only 3500# (2). so i go to my paper work and double check the weight.the dry weight is 6050#and the dry payload before option is 2650#. now if you add that up it comes to 8700# did the factory screw up or do they take into account the kingpin weight also which is 1650#.
now all of the car trailers i look at have a Max gross weight of what ever the axles add up to.who is correct or do i have the wrong axles under my camper? thanks jack k

70spoiler:
I have a similar situation on my travel trailer. The tires are only rated to carry 85% of the GVWR. The manufacturers response was that the remaining 15% should be on the hitch. The lesson to be learned is dont' overload the trailer thinking that "it will be ok" as it won't.

Really good point Sportdeck262, overloading is the single major cause of accidents and other problems experienced by the towing crowd. My 5th Wheel has similar ratings and that was the first question that I did ask when I purchased the rig. Everything has to be taken into account. This includes the passengers that are traveling with you. If your getting close to your max weight then you had better be careful and first and foremost --SLOWDOWN-.
