Special Service specs?

I'm looking at buying a 2001 Excursion with the 900A Special Service package. I've googled and ran multiple variation searches here but haven't found what it consists of. If you know of a link that breaks it down or somewhere on this site I'd greatly appreciate the information.

I think the 900A is only available to fleet services...The only information i could find on the 900A trim package is that it was the cheapest package ford offered, couldn't find any information on whats on it in terms of hardware and such though, if you ever find anymore info on it please post it back here, i'm interested to know if it comes with more HD breaks for law enforcement?

I'm curious, how do you know you want it, if you don't know what it is?

He knows what it is:
2001 Excursion with the 900A Special Service package

Basically i assume he wants to know the differences in the trim packages, i don't think its going to be a deal breaker to him...similar to the XLT and the Limited, he may just be curious

I've seen the pics of it. Its a light colored Excursion with a 7.3 at a price I find reasonable, so its what I want. The lack of leather, plastic "wood" decals, heated seats, and heated mirrors are a plus to me. I like my vehicles to be as simple as they can be yet still have the features I want. My query is no different than someone asking what is in the Convenience Group. As was hinted at, I want to know if it is like a state trooper mustang or LE law enforcement Camaro. Better cooling, brakes, lower gearing etc.

I will post up when I find more info.

Found this blurb on JD Powers. So far its the only reference to the 900A components. Looks like its just Ford's designation of the standard features that a particular vehicle comes with. I've seen the 900A group on lots of other Ford models during this search.

Available Trims for the 2002 Ford Excursion SUV
Trim MSRP
XLT 5.4L Special Service Vehicle (900A) $33,170
Limited 5.4L (300A) $39,145
Overview
The standard features of the XLT 5.4L Special Service Vehicle include 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), air conditioning, 16" steel wheels, cruise control, power mirrors, power windows, power locks, auto locking doors, remote keyless entry, and premium AM/FM stereo cassette, in-dash mounted single CD with 6 performance speakers.

So, if i google Special Service Excursion i find a few of them for sale in my area, all of the ones i found say "Former Police Vehicle" When i looked up the Police Package this is what i uncovered...Now remember i got this info from the internet, and you know, everythings 100% correct 100% of the time on the net Anyways here is what i found, not sure if this pertains to all of the 900A trims or not.

police packages from ford usually consist of
higher output alt (for emergency equip)
improved suspension package for better handling
i direct 12v connection under the pass dash
rubber floor liner vs carpet

So when you go see this thing, check the alt. I'm curious as to wether its a 110 amp or a higher (possibly 200 amp ambulance alt?)

Sounds like typical police "upgrade" . Some small towns probably just got whatever was out there for the space and power.

Well I bought the beast! I think the 900A must be the basic equipment package. I don't see anything "special" about my Ex. Seems like any other XLT Ford equipped vehicle. PW,PM,PL, CC,tilt, cloth seats, carpet, A/C. It does have lighted running boards, rear wiper, rear A/C, power driver's seat, 3rd row, polished alum wheels.

Drove her home from TN and the O/H computer said 19.8 MPG in the TN/AL hills and 21 MPG in FL, both at 70 MPH with 265s and A/C running.

I've gotta find a muffler as the PO only has some small device about the rear passenger doors (resonator maybe) and it DRONES when accelerating esp 50-65. And I need to get a factory air cleaner as it has a total hack job CAI (complete with duct tape!). Also I think it needs all the suspension bushings replaced as the steering has some wander and darting issues and lots of clunking from the rear over rough patches of highway. Some of the handling issues may be from the C load rating tires!

Here's a shot at the stealership, we really liked the color as there aren't many down here (haven't seen one yet)

This is my first 7.3 in a long time and my previous 6.9 and 7.3 weren't turbo'd so I have a couple of questions. When accelerating and I let up on the throttle and when the trans shifts into OD there is an audible PSSHHH air escaping noise. Mine does it and the others I've tested did it as well, is that the wastegate? My '01 Dodge Cummins didn't make this sound, so I'm curious. Also this rig doesn't seem to have near the ooomph of the Cummins of the same year, and I was really hoping for comparable performance seeing as the Ex is 2wd (vs 4x4, Quad cab, 3.54 gears, and 285 tires) and comparable HP/TQ ratings. I don't want to hurt this 180K mile rig by putting a tune on it but I'd really like it to be more responsive and keep my MPGs

Also mine has the chattering from the rear end while turning and taking off from a stop. I've read that its likely worn friction discs, has anyone had any luck changing to a different oil/additive to quiet it down? I would rebuild it but I've got a hundred other irons in the fire right now.

Nice color and different....those wheels might have been added. I have C rated LT tires and they handle very well. Might be your shocks clanging around.
