Fuel filter drain valve question??

Fuel filter drain valve question??

I got up this morning and there was a diesel puddle under my truck, so I crawl under and take a look and the fuel was draining out of a tude on the passenger side of the engine and I traced it back to the back of the fuel filter. I called a PSD mechanic buddy and he said when you start getting cold temp. snaps that the o-rings shrink up and this causes the o-rings to fail which causes fuel to drain out of the tube. My question is what causes this is it just the o-rings, and can I just replace the o-rings?? I checked with Ford parts and they want $68 for a fuel filter drain valve. Also, how often do these drain valves go bad?? Any feedback is much appreciated.

Replace the orings with the blue Flourosilicone orings from DieselOrings.com

If you can wait for a shipment, I would order from Bob at DieselOrings. His price for an upgraded o-ring kit (best available) is only $19.50 + S&H and includes every oring and seal necessary to completely reseal the entire fuel bowl.

Here is a link to that kit on his site, and make sure to select the option for the Blue orings which are the best material available.

I will order those o-rings from that o-ring guy. Many thanks for the video link...you guys are spot on in helping me fix my problem. I really appreciate the quick help and thanks in advance.

I saw your post on the other thread. Looks like you are well on your way with the help of The Brotherhood. Did Bob (Guzzle) talk to you about overhauling the whole fuel bowl (cheap but grade AAA parts)? It should be done, only takes a couple of hours if your don't know what you are doing and a half hour it you do...... (along with either 6 or 3 beers )

I figured it was ok to hijack this thread with a question since OP questions were taken care of... I recently rebuilt my fuel bowl and my hard line drain tube is clogged. I have tried compressed air, brake cleaner you name it and cannot get it un clogged. cant remove it cause its routed under the HPOP reservoir. Any suggestions other than running a piece of fuel line parallel until I have to do HPOP work on day?

You can try the same thing recommended for cleaning out the EBPV tube... get a heavy gauge piece of weedeater string which is not round, insert one end into a drill, and try to guide it downwards through the tube while spinning it with the drill. I would suggest using a piece of steel cable, but there is a good chance that the spinning end of the cable might just grind through the tube sidewall which will not and cannot happen with the plastic weedeater string.

One other option might be to get a piece of copper ground wire (like a #12) from a piece of house wiring and try snaking it through the tubing by hand. The copper is flexible enough to bend with the tubing, and the #12 is still stiff enough to not try to double up on you inside the tubing.
