While inspecting our fleet over the weekend, I discovered that one of our trucks was running around with an open intake. As near as I can tell, it's been this way since August when the EGR cooler was replaced. Obviously an open intake is very bad....luckily the turbo looks pretty good still so maybe we got lucky and caught this issue in time. We will be having a sit-down with our repair facility....
My question is, since there is a MAF sensor near the filter....why didn't the check engine light come on? Can't the PCM tell that a bunch of un-metered air was getting to the engine? If not, then what is the purpose of having the MAF in the first place? As far as I know, the engine was/is running and operating fine.
