Hello all,
I am usally hanging out in super duty section along with V10 section. I clicked my way over here to get some input.
I have a 2009, F250, CC, LB, 4X4, V10. This thing is a great truck. I bought it new in 2010 (last on the lot type of thing). I have 9500 miles on it. Never an issue.
For what I do now a days an F150 would do me just fine. I have been reading on here about some guys having some problems with this Ecoboost.
I was thinking of selling my F250 and going to buy an F150 with the Eco motor. The more I read the more I am not so sure. I even googled ford ecoboost problems and found plenty to read about.
So I am just typing her to get sometype of idea if I should or if I should not.
I understand that some people are picky, some you can never please and they complain about everything. But there seems to be more different type of problems that are going on with the Ecoboost motor.
As an example the V10, earlier models would blow plugs. That was one type of problem that happened alot.
The ecoboost motor I am reading there are alot of different problems, no power when towing. can not get above certain speeds. turbo issues, leaks.
So Is the V8 more trouble free than this ecoboost.
Hello...yes there are currently a few minor issues with the Ecoboost like condensation build up in the intercooler in some climates but I am not aware of any major issues concerning this motor. I am looking at getting the Ecoboost as well. What are you towing now? How heavy is it? I want the egoboost Ecuador of the torque at low rpm's. the 5.0 is a good motor too and sounds great. I would test drive them both and then make an informed decision...maybe try a tow if they will let you.
Well I tow a boat and some gear. Roughly between 4K and 5K. I do not think you can rent the ecoboost yet. I do not own the F250 out right. But I do owe alot less then what its worth.
If I decide to do this I think I am leaning towards the V8. I am true beliver in if more than one person is complaining about a few issues with a certain motor. I would not go that way.
I am sure that there will be alot of people who might chime in who own the ecoboost and have no problems.
from what i have read the only issues with the eco boost are minor teething issues. nothing major. i think its a great power plant and is/will make alot of people very happy.
personally, i would love your 250...last of the v10s. very reliable. how much do you drive? would the mpg increase be worth the loss in cash?
I don't think you could go wrong with either engine. I had a 2011 5.0 that failed at 600 miles due to a broken crankshaft, so the 5.0 isn't perfect either. After they replaced the engine, I had a few other mechanical failures. The dealership and Ford ended up doing right by me and got me into a new truck. I went with another 5.0, and so far I haven't had any issues with this truck's engine. I was a little nervous about going with the same engine, but I haven't regretted it one bit. I guess sometimes you just get a lemon. I will say the 5.0 sounds good when you give it some gas.
I'm towing between 8-10 thousand (depending if my bikes are loaded in the toy hauler) with an Ecoboost regularly without issue. Plenty of power to pull it along at 75+ if I wanted. The mileage drops off at those speeds (around 9-10 mph), but beyond that I absolutely love it.
I've had mine for over 1.5 years it hasn't had any issues at all. The people having issues yell a lot louder and more often than the happy owners. So you tend to hear from them more often than the happy owners.
Just rolling 18K trouble free miles with mine. I just returned today from a 400 mile round trip, raining and in the mountains, no issues and I averaged 23 MPG's on this trip hitting 75-80 both ways in the mountains and flats.
I haven't read any turbo issues yet though there could be some I suppose. The biggest complaints seem to be focused around intercooler condensation build up which is causing some power issues, throwing some codes, etc and poor MPG's when really working the engine hard.
I don't think the EB is an engine that wants to be babied in the least. I think they like to work hard. The harder I push mine the better she responds.

That is what I am trying to think out. I drive approx 400 miles a month on the V10 at computer MPG is 12.1, hand calculated is 11.6. The monthly payments would be the same and for the same amount of time (5 yrs left). The F250 was a 72 month deal. I have a 4 1/2 yrs left.
The V10 I get 9 mpg when I tow.
I was thinking for the weight that I tow and the better milage I would get with either the V8 or ecoboost. The monthly payment would be the same for about 5 years. I thought why not.
Know the V10 is a great engine I only have 9500 miles on it.
I am just throwing this stuff out there. I think it would just be an almost even deal. Other then the F250 has greater capacities than the F150. The F150 would fit in a garage (not really that important). I go farther on a tank of gas in a F150. Maintance is the same. So I guess it comes to monthly payment and term length of loan.
Now I would lose the two years of payments I already have on the F250.
I guess I should just keep the F250.
What do you think with all the info that threw up above.

I think your right. You tend to key on the ones that are having issues which represent a small percentage of the trucks that are sold and having no problems.

going by your numbers, i dont think the fuel cost really has any baring on the situation. 400 miles a month is pretty low, i do 1k miles or more monthly with my V10 in comparison.
i think it all comes down to what you really want to do. i dont know that the numbers really play much of a role here. other then the fact you are much closer to paying the f-250 off then you would be a new f-150.
we aren't you, so we cant really make the call. personally i love the new f-150s but i would not get rid of any of my current trucks for one. if your happy with the 250 why not keep it?
i wish you the best with any of your choices, because any of them will end up with you in a awesome truck!
Wendy has 12K+ on her EB and she loves that truck more than me. Zero problems. We have not towed with it but ran a ton of pellets in the back, the truck did not mind at all (MPGs stayed at 19mpg). Chris

For that small amount of driving, I'm not sure that I would make a move. The V-10 is an awesome engine and will be highly sought after for many years to come. In other words, you'll never have an issue selling your truck privately. Because of the V-10 and it's MPG's, a dealer will never give you what it's actually worth.
Google any specific engine or vehicle and you will find more problems brought to light than you will find praise. It seems to be a human trait to make most noise when there are negative things happening, and pretty quiet when all is well.
That being said, I've got an Ecoboost, have near 40000kms on it, and not an engine related issue ever. As a whole, the truck has been solid, couple minor issues, but nothing that would constitute me not buying another F150, or sway another person from buying a F150. My next one will be Ecoboost as well.
As has already been mentioned, drive the Ecoboost and the 5.0L back to back. Decide from there which one you should have. Both are great engines with very different character.
