Hi all, weird Q but here goes:
Just got a '01 F250 PSD 6-spd. Previous owner was a friend with whom I served overseas. The valve cover tag says 275hp and everything I've read says this model came with a cat, but there's no cat and the exhaust piping all looks to be original 3.5" with no cutouts.
I can't ask the previous owner, we lost him two years ago but his father swears the truck is all original.
Does anyone know of Canadian versions of this truck that might have come without a cat? Thks.
Many 7.3 models did not come with a cat. Check your valve cover sticker. If you see OC under emissions equipment then it came with a cat. If not, then it didn't.
Thks Greg. It has OC on the sticker, clearly the cat was removed early in the life of this truck. Pity it's still only a 3.5" exhaust, still going to have to upgrade that to a 4" when I find the money.
May not have been built with one even though the engine sticker says it - seen several of these (4 I know of) around here. (most - qty 3 - are late MY build 01's with another being a early 02)
The Navistar Engine Sticker has OC on it but we know the original owners and the exhaust systems haven't been touched since the trucks were purchased. Maybe Navistar set them up that way and when the engines were installed by ford during the build they didn't put the cat type of exhaust on. The 01's we have seen like this around here were all built in KY the 02 is a canadian truck.

Very interesting. Thanks for the info. Hopefully the OP doesn't have emissions requirements in his area because the sticker is what they go by to determine cat or no cat.
Next time one of these comes into the shop for service I'll try to remember to get the VIN & engine SN - be interesting to see what the window sticker has on it. I always thought none of the 00-03's had cats on them till I saw one that had come this way from CA - 1st SD we'd ever seen with a cat and a glow plug controller. Deleted the cat & GP controller, installed a regular GPR for the owner & gave him a 4" exhaust. No emissions testing around here and no req for Diesel's to have a cat. Good thing too, lots of "straight piped or resonator only muffled" diesel's of all makes running around here.
My 01 is supposed to have a cat, but it doesn't. All stock exhaust as well.
Is there a sticker onder the hood, near the latch bar that says "non-catalyst"? I have seen photos of trucks with that sticker but have never actually seen the sticker in person. Perhaps the sticker on the hood is there to ammend the valve cover sticker? If so, that would make perfect sense. By that time, Ford would have known the 7.3 days were numbered and maybe they had a bunch of engines with the OC sticker on the valve cover yet still wanted to use the engines anyway....(just thinking out loud...)
Whats all this? I thought NO 7.3's had cats? My 03 X doesn't have a cat (all original), I'll have to look at the sticker to see what it says.
Every e99 that I've seen had a cat, then it was hit and miss after that. Some did, some didn't. Not sure why.
None of my trucks came with cats, and they all have to go through emissions every year. During the inspection, they use a flashlight or boroscope to view the valve cover sticker and look for the "OC".

Ill have to check, from what I've seen most of the 7.3s with cats are 450's or 550's
My '97 7.3 F250 came with a cat, that and the muffler were the first things to go.
I'm in Alberta, only testing done in this province is if you bring in a used vehicle, then there's a mech inspection with no emission testing and none forever after.
Having cleaned off all of the gunge and corrosion, there does appear to be a newer piece of pipe in there, couldn't see it before. No big deal, would have had to do it anyway so happy coincidence.
Thread creep: have heard lots of exhaust size ideas from leave the 3.5" to all 4" to 4" downpipe and 5" rest. Looking for informed opinion about it...
I wonder if ford was doing it to just test cats with diesels to see what happens. If they failed somehow they didn't want all their trucks to fail (big recall) just a few here and there so they can replace the cat and make the money. If it has no problems they know the cats they designed are fine for diesels. Its a win win win for them.
