I have an 01 5.4. I am going to replace my starter this weekend and was looking at how to do that. It looks like the top bolt may be a problem to remove.
anyone know a quick way to remove it. I would think if the top bolt can be remove quickly the whole job would only be couple of hours.
I have a 5.4 and a 4.6, and I just pulled the 4.6 engine. Can't say for sure if they are exactly the same when installed because of mounts and such, but on the 4.6, I just used 3 3/8" extensions to gain the length. Then the top bolt could easily be removed from farther forward ( down behind the radiator ). Just feed the socket/extensions over/around the engine mount, and use your fingers to guide it on the bolt head.
Unless you have a bent wrench ( like a "C" ), not much else will fit up there and still give any swing clearance.
