Question 351m running rough, suddenly

Hey guys, got a problem here. I just bought a '77 F150 w/ a 351m. It's got 30k on a rebuilt motor and tranny, mild rv cam, no leaks etc. I've had it for a couple of weeks now and everything was going smooth. It was running a little warm but a new thermostat fixed that. I got in it a couple of days ago and it started runnin real rough. I changed the plug, wires, cap, and rotor. No change. Also, I checked the exhaust. The left side is hot and smells clean but the right side smells like gas and I can literally hold the pipe. Any ideas? Timing, burnt valve, carburation? I don't have any excess crank case pressure that I can tell.

Take the ignition module in to get it tested at the parts store.

I put a new ing. module in the other night to no avail. Then I checked and set the timing to 12* btdc. Next I found a vacuum line loose and that seemed to help but it had a valve ticking lightly. I didn't like it, but thought it would be ok to drive the 40 miles home. WRONG. I got about 20 miles and all hell broke loose. I parked it for the night and towed it home in the morning. The next day I pulled the valve cover to find a broken valve spring (root cause I believe), 2 bent push rods, and a valve broken off in the cylinder. I won't be sure how bad the damage is until I get the head off. Hopefully I can replace the piston, hone the cylinder, and get the heads redone without pulling the motor. Freak deal I guess???!!!!????

Ouch! I would check the piston to valve and spring bind clearance. Also cam timing. Something probably was not right to cause that.

One of my friends has a '77 or'78 parts truck he is giving me. If it has a 400 in it I think I would rather spend the money rebuilding that. Any advice or thoughts on this subject?????
