This weekend I installed a new battery in my 96 F150. Now the weird part is that the check engine lite was always on hot or cold. I just wondered if it was possible that the bad cell in my old battery could have caused that? I'm sure by disconnecting the battery it reset the computer, but will it come back? (check engine lite).
Most likely you reset the computer. If the light was on, there was a problem with the computer. It takes awhile for the computer to regain error codes, so it may come back on. However, the computer could have gotten ghost error codes and reseting the computer eliminated them.
I agree. You probably had a fault that was around long enough to make it to the continuous memory portion of the computer, but is no longer considered a fault by the diagnostic software. Diagnostics run continuously so a reoccurance may again illuminate the light, but for now it is not (at least by the computer) thought to be a fault. Things that can do this are oxygen sensors that are soon to fail or have faulty or dirty connections, vapor recovery system faults (gas cap not tightened, loose vapor recovery line, etc.) and a sticky EGR valve. For now, drive on. Let us know what the codes are when the light comes on again (and we are pretty sure it will)....
