Double Din stereo install

Time to upgrade my stereo. Like every other button in my truck, dust got into the stock stereo buttons so many of them stick. Also, I don't really need a tape deck and there has been a CD stuck in it since I got the truck.

Here is the adapter to plug into the stock wiring harness

Here is the wiring harness that comes with the stereo (Pioneer 1400). Here I started connecting the wires together. Soldered and shrink tubed.

And the completed wiring harness. One end for the Ford harness, one end for the stereo. Just used the elec tape to hold everything together, not for the actual connections

Here's the stereo I removed with the SSTs I made to remove it. (Specialized service tool 8-). Used a coat hanger obviously. Insert them, then spread the two away from each other while pulling the stereo out. Was actually pretty tough.... easier cause I was able to pull with the tape opening

The next step is to remove the 2 screws above the stereo opening.

Then just pull the whole dash panel off. Just a bunch of clips. This is a pic of the back where you can see all of the electrical plugs that need to be disconnected to remove it.

Here's a pic of the interference of the dash panel and the stereo.

Shaved off the plastic ribs and made the opening wider (on top and bottom only - not the sides) using a dremel. This is by far the easiest way to make the opening bigger.

Here you can see the stereo through the opening

Here I've got the harness plugged in. I also added a RCA cable for output to an external player. You can also see the green wire making it's way to the driver side to splice into the e-brake indicator wire (to prevent watching video while driving - I'll likely by-pass this function later)

And here it is installed. I forgot to take a pic of the stereo with the 2 side plates screwed to it (the install kit is just 2 side plastic pieces that screw into the body of the stereo). You have to use the flush mount screws to fit the stereo and mounting plates into the ford opening (without trimming the sides anyway). You can see from this view that the finish isn't perfect on top of the stereo. But you don't see this much.

And here is the finished view. The bottom finishes nicely with a little trim piece that you need to fit in as you slide the stereo in. The stereo and mounting plates snap into the dash panel (in fact, the stereo is only mounted to the front dash panel). NOTE - DO NOT put the 2 screws back into the top of the stereo opening before pushing and snapping the stereo back in.... you won't be able to remove the stereo and dash panel again without breaking them out

Do you have steering wheel controls and if so, do they still work with the new unit? I need to replace mine on my Ex, but not in a real hurry.

Don't know if it will work (but imagine it would). Mine doesn't have them.

This unit can accomodate a back up camera too. Just haven't added one yet. What unit did you install?? (stereo and back up system)

Thanks

Shop on ebay for a decent cheap camera and they will pretty much all integrate with the stereo.

You can get the integrated steering wheel controls. Some have the stuff as a package, some you need to add the module.

I dont have controls on the wheel, but I have a remote with my kenwood deck.

I got a Jensen VM9225BT from Crutchfield. I used my Discover Card reward dollars to purchase discounted gift cards to get a $60 discount. And I keep telling myself that since it was reward dollars, it was "free". The camera I'm using is a $18 one off of ebay, cheap and works great. I ran wires to one of the tail lights to tap into the reverse light wires for power.
