If I'm removing engine-what else should I do while it's out?
I am coming up with a plan to do some engine work on my 460 in the 74 F350 regular cab, SCS, 2WD w/C6. Pretty mint/clean with only 43K original miles. Primarily new carb, intake manifold relacement, new pre-72 timing chain, rear main seal, clean out oil plan/screen. While the engine is out, I plan on painting the block and cleaning up the engine compartment. My mechanic/friend has a small single bay shop/garage and we will be tackling this but I can't have it apart for long as this is how he makes his living and he doesn't have much space for the truck to just be sitting around for a long period of time. He has to work on other cars.
While the engine is out, what other "easy or smaller project" type preventative maintenance items might I consider doing that is convenient to get to. Example, perhaps replace the motor mounts? Suggestions?
A good pressure wash/scrub of the engine compartment and front frame rails. If you don't have time to re-paint, at least touch up. For the frame, if you can get the grease and loose rust off, a brush coat of Eastwood rust encapsulator will help preserve them. A top coat of SG black Rustoleum if you have time.
