Guys did a quick internet search but couldnt find anything. I have a friend who just bought a 2012 Dodge Cummins, I know sucks to be him but he's is a good friend despite his brand of truck. He wanted the 2012 vs the 2013 model because he claims that as the DEF drops, power to the engine is reduced until it is topped off.
Now I have the 6.0 so I would not know but this sounds like total BS to me. I can see if you totally run out that something like that might happen but not as it drops. Help me out here guys any truth to that? Thanks.
Power does not drop as DEF is used in a normal way on the Fords.
If you ignore the many warnings that you're about to run out, engine power will then be reduced and eventually you won't be able to move it after engine start.
But you're provided 800 miles to comply or simply keep the tank filled as normal maintenance and it runs great.
A sensor failure will also set it to reduced power which has happened on some trucks.
If anything, you have more power to use.
If you've used 4 gallons of DEF, that means the truck is almost 33 lbs lighter!
If he is really thinking of trading for one of the new fords, I would like to know why. Just curious! Thanks.
He currently has an 07 Dodge w/Cummins that is needing some engine work and he is wanting to trade it off. Also, he found a local Ford dealer that will take his Suzuki Hyabusa as part of the trade-in too. Wife + 1 or 2 kids = get rid of your toys , it's time to grow up.
Also, he has heard a few stories that the new 6.7L HO Cummins is not that powerful and he doesn't want to wait until the new DEF model Cummins come out for fear his current Dodge will strand him, since it is shutting off at will. A lot of factors adding up to, it's time for something different. He quizs me often about my truck and I think he's got the fever. We'll see how it goes.
I was just looking at the new ford and dodge last week. Really liked the ford!! I did like the dodge some to, really liked there sound system. I know there is problems with the emission crap on them, but after all that crap has been deleted it seems they are good trucks. I do feel the cummins has been a more reliable motor. To be completely honest I'm having a little trouble believing in any of these diesel's as far as long life. Other then a (long term concern) of the motor and trans, me, my wife and one of my buddies that went with us love the new ford.
Oh almost forgot the most important part! From the reviews the ford seems to be getting really good mileage, for a truck anyways! Doesn't sound like the dodge is getting all that good of fuel mileage even after deletes.
Thanks guys thats what I figured but ya never know these days. I spoke with an aquaintance of another friend today who happens to be a Ford Service Advisor and she said basicly the same thing.

UPDATE:
My buddy traded his Dodge for 2012 Chevy 250HD Duramax, crew cab, long bed. He got a pretty good deal. They took his Dodge and his Hyabusa on trade for $32,000. the truck came to $42,000. So, he basically owes $10,000 on a new 2012. The truck was used. It had 700 miles on it when the nipple on the heater core broke off. The original owner didn't trust it and traded it off. My buddy said since it was used and GM offers an additional 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty on certified used vehicles, then he got a 48,000 mile, 4 year bumper to bumper warranty and maintenance contract for 7 oil changes with free DEF fills also. Not bad deal. I teased him, " At least we got you out of a Dodge!"
