Trailer Wind Deflector
Trailer Wind Deflector
I just got a 98 Explorer and the Veterans Administration installed an electric mobility device carrier ( scooter ) on a class 3 hitch.
I had been avg. almost 21 MPG, after the install my MPG dropped to 18 MPG. and this is without the scooter on it !
I recently drove from St. Louis, MO. to Kokomo, IN. with a large hard shell cargo carrier on the roof rack and noticed that my MPG went back to 20 MPG. Fully loaded down and with the scooter on the back.
This newly installed carrier, when not in use is folded up and is about 24" from the rear hatch. I think that the wind coming off the roof is getting caught in between the hatch and platform ( like dragging a wall ).
I am wanting to buy a Trailer Wind Deflector that will mount to the luggage rack.
I did inquire about removing this carrier when I'm not using it, but was told by the installer that because it's rated at 500lbs, it falls under DOT regs and was advised not to remove it. It is actually bolted to the receiver, not a locking pin.
Any advice ?
