Gear Ratio
Can anyone tell me a somewhat accurate way to determine the gear ratio without pullining the Diff. cover off. I Heard jack it up and wheel to driveshaft turning can give you the ratio. But I dont Know the formula. Thanks 1979 Ford Bronco with 38.5

even easier way is like torque said, but turn the wheel 20 times, then take the # of drive shaft rev's devided by 10 = ratio
rev's/10 = ratio
rev's/10 = ratio

But Bull, I don't have that many fingers! My Momma ties my shoes on in the morning with doubler knots so I cants take them off to use my toes... It is hard enuf to turn the wheel with my feet whilst I am countin!

You could look at the tag on the diff housing, you should have a ford 9''. If you don't and you have the vin code and rear end code you can go to Mil1lion's website he has a link to a decoder.

Well, he said it had a diff cover.
That makes it a Dana Rear
Ratios available.
3.54,3.73,4.10

Thanks and its Ford 9" in the rear & a Dana 44 in the Front I had already looked up the tag # it said 3.50 But it pulls pretty good to be 3.50 ratio with 38 on it so ill try the wheel to D/S ratio. thanks.
