I have a 92 F150 4x4 300 I6 that is having an issue where it will start and run fine then I will shut off the key go to start again and get no power... No fuel pump no lights.. nothing .... walk away and come back and it cranks right up... there is no consistent pattern I even beat it around the property today to see if I could make it shut off... I will not stop running once going but will occasionally have no power... I assumed a short or loose connection but I am not sure that is the issue.. is there some sort of relay or fuse that could be causing this? Thanks
somebody beat me to the suggestion of cleaning the battery terminals - but I'll second the idea.
I've lost count of the number of times I've helped friends having similar troubles - all swear their terminals are clean - and that it couldn't be something THAT simple - it must be a loose wire somewhere because it works sometimes and then nothing other times...
One friend had it narrowed down to the transmission lockout, because every time he shifted back and forth a few times, the car would then start.
He spent half the day taking stuff apart, testing circuits, he was SURE he was close to solving it - I went over, pulled the corroded battery terminals for him, shined them up - as always, problem solved. (he's still thinks he probably fixed it by wiggling wires around, and will never admit I was right)
I considered making mine work only with the key on just to eliminate the chance of leaving them on and killing the batteries. I installed 4 headlight relays a while back (the other 2 are for plow lights), wasnt feeling THAT ambitious that day.
There are other things that are powered all the time, dome light circuit for one.
