Any comments or advice on this thread would be most appreciated. Do I really need the 19# injectors and would the fuel mileage be effected one way or the other.
If you're engine isn't significantly modified I wouldn't mess with it. It will help throttle response, but not much for overall power. I added 19's after installing headers and got those results. On the track the 19's have not proven to be worth much as far as performance goes. I lost about 3 mpg in town when I went to 19's, but highway didn't lose as much if anything. IMO there are much better ways to spend $300 on a 300. Also, I have yet to use anything that says Accel on it that was worth a crap. You are better off pulling a set off a junk car for $50. If you must have a new set go with the Ford Motorsport injectors.
Thanks for your reply, Silver Streak. I've already decided against the 19# injectors.
So you're saying that these Accel injectors ($173 for 6 from Summit) would be no good compared to the higher priced, no name ones I can get at my local Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts or even the local boneyard?
Aren't the Ford Motorsports at least twice as expensive?
Does anyone else share Silver Streak's opinion on this?
The FMS 19's are only $210 for a set of 8, which is cheaper per injector than the Accel's.
The Accel might be better than a set from the boneyard, but I've never seen anything made by Accel that was very good. All that propaganda on the Accel site is stuff that will go into any good injector. The only real plus to Accel is they offer some fairly uncommon sizes like 15 and 17. If I was going to upgrade from a stock injector I would probably do the 15's because they wouldn't require an adjustable regulator. 17's are iffy with the stock regulator, I know 19's will need the adjustable regulator unless you like raw fuel dripping out your tailpipe at idle.
SS, thanks for your reply. You answered my question ahead of time - I had pretty much decided on the 15# thinking I could probably go with them without the adjustable fuel reg. I really didn't want or need to get into that mod. It seems to me that the 15# is closer to what they should be, based on the formulas I've seen. What do you think the fp would run with the 15#?
The fuel pressure will remain the same with the 15's as it would with the 14's. The regulator will hold it constant as long as the pump is capable of pumping enough fuel to maintain that pressure. On the 300 low side pressure is usually 40-50 psi, high side 55-60. The 14's at 80% duty cycle are capable of feeding about 180-190 hp at 60 psi. I think they used the 14lb injectors so they could jack up the fuel pressure to help prevent vapor lock in the fuel rail. This would be more likely on the 4.9 because the exhaust system is right below the fuel rail.
