overheating with new water pump

My water pump went out this week, and I just got it back together today, and now it's overheating. It didn't overheat with the old pump, just leaking water from the weep hole. I installed the new pump and filled with antifreeze/water mix. Temp gauge climbs whether idling or going down road. Plenty of water and it appears to be circulating OK. I thought thermostat might be stuck, so I removed it entirely, and still runs WAY too hot. I ran without a thermostat for a couple of months last year and it ran very cool(too cool) then. Any ideas? It's undriveable for more than a few minutes at a time and I've GOT to get back on the road.

Here is a thought, did you get the right pump for your year. I may be mistaken but don't some ford water pumps turn clockwise and some turn counterclockwise, I believe the fans do and the fan is bolted to the pump. If you still have the old pump compare the impeller blades to the new one and make sure the rocket scientists at the local autozone didn't give you the wrong pump.
Think about it --- it worked before and it dont work now, and you only did one thing, well coulda been somthin I done wrong or the dummy gave me the wrong part--wouldn't be the first time.
