I have a 2009 Explorer 4x4 with 65,000 miles. So it is out of warranty. I was having front end noise at about 35 to 60 where it was a loud hum like I had big knobby tires. I replaced both front wheel bearings and the noise was gone.
Except for a very noticeable inconsistent rubbing noise that can be felt in the steering wheel at all speeds. It is the same in turns either direction. I have visually inspected the CV joint boots that are all intact. I don't see any visual indications of rubbing or wear.
The vehicle was put up on a lift. Noise is not present when turning rear wheels but is present turning either front wheel.
Any ideas of what is the problem? Any experience with similar problems?
Did you find out what is making tho noise, my 2006 Expo is making a weird noise (vibration) & I think its the front drive shaft CV between the transfer case & the front diff........
Long overdue update.
The nose I was hearing was the front differential.
I approached Ford's Customer Relationship Center and asked if they would cover it under warranty since it was at 65K miles. They said no. So I forked out $2000 for a differential overhaul to have it repaired at my local mechanic shop. All noises were gone and many miles down the road, I took it to a local Ford dealer for new tires. Tire prices at Ford are hard to beat. Service advisor tells me that my Explorer has a 100K powertrain warranty. The service advisor said they would approach Ford for relief of the repairs. Again Ford said no. If I knew it had a 100K powertrain warranty, I would have taken the vehicle to Ford and not the local mechanic.
