Really I like either of those motors, in terms of how they sound. His 02 duramax would beat mine any day and mine would smoke the 6.5 my friend has any day.
Get rid of the muffler/resonator/cat and straight pipe it. The neighbors say mine sounds like a jet spooling up on the runway. Has a nice whistle up until 2300ish rpm's, then its all diesel clatter, or at least it is in the cab.

i think a cumapart sounds like a farm tractor.
and a modified cumapart with no muffler and stacks sounds like a large farm tractor.
there is nothing like the sound of a turbocharged V8 diesel.
Well by reading all the post, every body has different opinions, I think one of the posters hit it on the head. The turbo is heard along with the exhaust note.
Mine whistles out the pipe if your cruising but not on the throttle. I let my buddy drive it to town yesterday and I was listening to it idling down the drive way at the farm and all I could hear was that puff puff puff, I may need to put it on the rack and see if I may have an exhaust leak.
The guy that had id before me didn't do the best job of putting the 4 inch pipe under it.

Everybody's entitled to an opinion, and I won't begrudge you yours. If you're unhappy with the sound your truck is pumping out, get under there and figure out what's going on. Could be a leak, could be a hole, could be the setup the PO put on.

The GOOD ones sound like a tractor. I like that sound. The bad ones sound so much worse. It's difficult to describe.
