Bought me a 96 Ranger 4 cyl 5 speed 147k miles to save the miles on my 2000 Camaro z28 for $1500. This thing runs like a champ, has a new motor in it and a new clutch. Brakes and suspension are good the only downfall is the steering. Now the ball joints and tie rods have NO play so I know its not related to that. The inside of my tires on both fronts are being worn down pretty bad (positive camber i'm assuming). Also the steering gearbox is insane. Theres alot of play so I tried tightening the nut and when it actually wants to turn it tries to cut across lanes on the highway. I can see the play in the gearbox because I see the shaft wobble left and right but theres no input to the pitman arm. I have done some searching and it seems like I need to order some bushing possibly so a shop can adjust the camber? I've also read that sometimes the bushings are so bad that once you replace them it might fix the alignment? If someone could send me a link of what bushings to buy and how to do the install that would be greatly appreciated. Also any help on the gearbox would be appreciated too. Thanks
*Yes I need to turn the nut the opposite way so it doesnt wear out the gearbox and pump prematurely
If I knew more about these trucks, I would have gladly replied.
However, since you asked.
I think you're on the right track with the gearbox - Given what you described, I would get that replaced. You should be able to find a junkyard unit that's still in reasonably good condition.
As for the bushings, I would get a shop/repair manual of some kind so that you have some sort of visual reference to go by.
For replacement bushings, I would suggest looking them up on RockAuto.com.
