Hey everyone. My 97 F-150 A/C blows out only warm air no matter what setting I choose. I took it in hoping for the easy fix and get a recharge on the A/C system. Rarely do you ever get the easy fix.
After an A/C Service and a leak check, the guys told me that I have a leak in my evaporator. Then they told me that it was going to take a new evaporator core, new expansion valve, new oriface tube, a new dryer, and 10 hours worth of labor to fix with a grand total of $800. This seems excessive.
How can I investigate to tell if this is definitely the problem and how can I fix it without out replacing the whole damn systyem?
You might try having someone charge the system with freon and just see how long it lasts. As long as it doesn't use R-12, which it shouldn't, you should be able to get it charged up for a lot less than $800.00. I used to have an older truck with a freon leak so I paid a guy $40.00 to charge it up and it would last the whole year. Like I said a lot less than $800.00. The only problem is finding someone to keep adding freon to the system. If you don't know someone that can do it and a shop won't do it, then ask one of the mechanics at a local shop to do it on the side.
By the way, you might have more than a freon leak. If so, this won't help much but from what they say you need, that sounds like the problem.
