Bed with side compartment

I've seen the beds with the compartment/door on the side. What I was wondering is...was this an option on any F-100? I'm asking because I think the bed with the compartment on it is kind of neat and was thinking about swapping out the ratty old bed on my 68 F100 with the bed from a 68 Ranger that someone is parting out.

I plan on making some non factory modifications to my truck, but I want to limit it to mostly non-visible/mechanical changes, so I was thinking that if that style bed was available for any F100, it'd be fun to put on one my truck.

Thanks.

I think the only limit was long bed, I just have never seen one on a short bed before.

Don't know if this will help, I switched beds on my 71 4wd sports custom f250 to a ranger bed with the side box. Had a little clearance problem with the inner side of box shell hitting the rear spring eye bolt. Made a 3" round cut out in the back side of the side box shell. Then made a little cover patch door so could get to spring bolt when needed with 2 screws and some rtv sealer to keep and water out. But found that ford make the box inner shells out of galvanize and later some type of polyethylene to combat corrosion. My box was the galvanized steel one that did get corroded inside as these are air tight so, I drilled about (6) 1/2" holes in the upper back side near the top for a air vent, I cut a piece of screen to cover over the holes to keep bugs out. Used rtv to hold it in place. Works for me my 2cents..

My F-100 has the factory plastic bed side tool compartment. I was going to swap it one time with the steel bed side tool compartment from a F-250, but they were not the same depth. The steel one is deeper. At the time, I didn't want to drill any additional mounting holes, so I left the plastic one in.

1967/72: There's only one: C7TZ-9946132-A .. Tool Compartment.

Factory installed option, also available at the parts counter as a kit for all 1967/72 F100/250 8' Stylesides.

Tool compartments for short & long Styleside beds were available for 1964/66 F100/250 2WD, 1966 F100 4WD.

I've never see plastic parts used with any of these tool comparments, nor for the 1973/79 F100/350 8' Styleside tool compartment.

Yep, mine is definitely plastic. Just checked it again a couple of days ago to make sure. As far as I know it came from the factory that way. Haven't owned it since day one, but it has been in the family since 1974 and dad and I have never replaced it.

Since its so rare, maybe I can sell it for a whole bunch on ebay.

If it was bought that way it would likely be a dealer installed option, not factory. But then again I have been proved wrong before. But you got a picture of it?

So it is possible that between June of 1972 and May of 1974 that someone else may have put the plastic box in.
