You said the coolant is black, it is probably an intake manifold or head gasket leak. Look for a intake gasket leak first befor tearing off the head. Water getting into the cylinder under certain circumstances causes a steam knock similar to a rod knock but higher up in the motor. This will lead to furthur damage up to and including hydralic locking and bending of rods/breaking of pistons.
I flushed the coolant, and it turned out to be mostly water, and was only kinda black in the reservoir So i don't think it would be a intake manifold or head gasket leak. I will check it out to make sure.
So i still have not be able to pin point the noise. I took out one spark plug and there was oil on its threads. is this a bad problem or just some oil go onto it. There seems to be no oil on the tip of the spark plug. I plan on replacing all the spark plugs later this week.
Should my next step be taking off the valve covers?
it seems like the ticking goes in and out, one second it would be loud, then quiet, then loud again for over a span of 4-6mins. once the engine is heated up at about 1/4 on the gauge.
I have no one really in my life to help me out one on one, and give me those tips a dad would etc. so depending on you guys to help me out. thanks
Oil on th espark plug threads may simply be a leak from the valve cover gasket. Your noise is probably loose intake valve clearance at the cam or worn cam lobe.
Your cam will have a flat spot on the lobe or other obvious damage. Use a feeler gauge/micrometer. Check your oil flow to it. If oil flow is low progressive damage willhappen.
I took off the drivers side valve cover, I turned the truck on and oil went everywhere, so i think its safe to say its getting oil. No chain slap, and didnt hear any noise, the truck only stayed on for about 20 secs before it died.
I felt the rocker arms, and the ones in tdc can be moved side to side just a tad and makes a clicking sound. I think it is normal? Am i correct? other then that the rocker arms seem real tight no up and down movement. Springs look intact. How do i tell if the lash adjuster are good?
the cam lobes feel smooth, and didnt feel any flat spots etc or noticeable.
