My 1964 COE

The 4th digit of the VIN is the engine code. 1961/64: B = 262 1V I-6 (intro'd 1961, used thru 1964) / J = 223 1V I-6 (intro'd 1954, used thru 1964).

Both: The intake/exhaust manifolds are on the left (drivers) side of the engine.

There were industrial engines of both, but I doubt your truck has an industrial engine as they were not installed in trucks.

Okay, I guess I was misinformed about it being an industrial engine then. Lots of people refer to the 300 straight six as an industrial engine in the same vein.

Mine is a 262 and it really runs good! The prior owner had the carb rebuilt and as I said earlier rebuilt the front brakes and wheel bearings for a delivered price of 600 bucks, to my front door. I am guessing it has a top end of about 60 mph at best, and that is unloaded on a level road. But it is perfect for a homeowner with a large property.

The prior owner drove it to my house from a town about 20 miles away, and then I drove him back home in my 1984 Ford F- 250 with a stroked 460 (516 c.i.) with an edelbrock performer carb and manifold and ported and polished heads.

For some reason, he kept exclaiming that the F-250 "had ***** the size of grapefruit" . Even with a heavy duty tandem axle dump bed trailer it was towing, the F-250 jams you back HARD in the seat when he push the gas.

Something I will have to get used to NOT happening with the COE.

What people might these be?

I've probably read more posts on FTE than any other member. I cannot recall one post where someone referred to the 300 as an industrial engine.

I was a Ford partsman for 35 years. Not once did I ever refer to the 300 as such, dunno anyone else in 'the biz' that did either.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Twisp sounds cool, but that's incredibly far away from me. But maybe someday! I have turned on a dime here, and am going the opposite way....too wmjoe's disappointment ha!

Picked up an econoline van for 700 bucks here locally that was just too good to pass up, in fact if I wasn't using it I'd probably keep it to drive, but now it's going onto that instead of trying to work with the original.
So if anyone needs any integral parts from this let me know. I'll have the engine (239), trans, driveline, rear end. I can ship small to mediumish parts, but if it's something like the entire rear end it'll have to be local. I can maybe crate up the trans if someone really needs that.

The goal is to save as much scrap metal as I possibly can off this thing to help it fund itself as much as possible. So much so, that I went to the trouble of removing every single rusty old bolt from the wood flatbed and saved it. Ends up weighing a lot when put together! lol. Anyways, that's what is going on currently. Will take some pics soon.

Cool, Thanks. I will keep an eye out for you. I need one of those also! Two parts I really need badly are the caps for the u-joint in the back end. The guy I bought it off of took the drive shaft off to tow and lost the bolts and both caps. Not sure about the motor yet. I haven't tried starting mine yet because there was no solenoid. I just got a solenoid today and will try to crank it sometime this week. I would love to know more about your rig and what you are doing with it. Maybe I can come up and see it sometime? Did you put a different motor in it? Mine has a 292 ci y block. I haven't decided yet if I will keep it or not. People keep telling me that the 56 is a really rare one so I may keep it stock. My first plan was to make a car hauler out of it, but lately I have been thinking about just doing a flatbed or some kind of RV. Great to meet you on here and hopefully we can compare notes as we fix these bad boys up. All the best, Damion

No disappointment here. Build it how you want it, it's yours. Personally, if it's got a history, and is in great shape, or is of a really rare model, it's a shame to see 'em get chopped up, and street rodded out. If it's borderline, they make good resto-mod rides, and if it's in bad shape, build the snot out of it. That's how I decide which way to go. For someone else, hey, it's your rig, build it. I may not like it, but I'm not anyone important, so it aint no big deal.

I hear you Joe. I am also one to go stock if it is truly a rare vehicle. That is part of the reason I bought it in the first place. It has been sitting in a field for almost 15 years getting ruined. I couldn't let such a beautiful vehicle go to waste. This one is in pretty good shape too. Cab corner rust, which is typical and a some rust on the drivers side floorboard of course. Other than that just some minor dings here and there. I am sure once I get it running and drive it around it will be a little easier to decide which direction I want to go. Thanks for posting! and for the Laugh!

Yeah, when I really sat down and thought about it. The rarity of all the parts had a big factor, as well as the fact that I really want something more manageable (i.e., not so freakin' huge haha). I mean it took 3 people to lift the rear end up into the trailer. So the availability of parts for the econoline van chassis with the 302 was just so plentiful that I figured hell, 700 bucks, i'll take it and work on top of that, and have a nice cruiser for myself to enjoy vs. having the headache of a one year engine and dually widowmakers.
I won't be going bigtime custom, just going to add a 9ft. express bed from midfifty.com.

Damion, that silver COE of yours looks familiar, like I saw it on eugene craigslist or something...is that right?

It was on Medford Craigslist a couple of weeks ago. I just got it in my driveway this past Friday. It used to be a water truck for a rural fire department down there.

Oh, I remember that one. It looked straight, and in pretty good shape. Didn't it say it had newer tires too? I think it even said it ran, and drove. The asking price was pretty good too, for the particular model of truck it is. Good score. Actually, you both scored some pretty good COE trucks. Awesome.
