Concrete Storage

Is there a safe way to store bagged concrete? I've recently been given 25 80 lb bag's of concrete. For now their sitting in my garage, but I have a problem with dampness, and I'm concerned that all this free concrete will draw moister and go bad. Any suggestion's? I don't have any plan's for it at the moment and it may sit for quite awhile.

Stack the bags on a pallet. Wrap perimeter in shrink wrap and keep out of direct moisture. Should keep for a very long time this way (years). If the bags have tears close these up before putting in your garage - the dust gets everywhere and not one of the best things to breath in.
If you do a good job stacking throw another pallet on top and stack more stuff on that...that way you'll get that much more of a workout when the time comes to use the concrete.

Some home centers, ie. Lowes, will have it. It comes on a roll usually about 16in. wide. Almost like Glad Wrap.

I'll give them a call this morning. It's strange to find out about product's you didn't realize existed to the general public. I thought that product was only availible to big company's.
I have a small wooden storage building that stay's dry. Maybe that would be better also? I just don't like the thought of packing around those bag's again.

You can also buy stretch wrap at U-haul or other moving supply comapnies.

I would also put a sheet of plastic on the pallet before stacking the bags, to stop the concrete from drawing moisture from the air.

Cheers,
Eric

I have put concrete sacks into white plastic garbage bags and sealed them for safe keeping. Just remember, you are only talking an investment of $2 for an 80 pound bag of concrete.

It sounds like you need to replace that broken concrete walk, step, AC pad, deck support....

I did find the plastic wrap today at Lowe's. They had it in 2ft. width's and as long as 500ft. I didn't think that I'd need quite that much, so I bought a 50ft roll. It's been raining all day, perhap's I'll put it in the storage building tomorrow and wrap it up. Thank's for the suggestion.

I don't have enough bag's, but if I did that's what I'd do.

Thumbs down Concrete Storage

Are you sure this isn't a white elephant in disguise?

How long do you think you will be storing this stuff? I would not have the room for it unless a project was at least on the horizon.

Try this little exercise, it sure turned me into less of a clutter catcher.

Take your monthly house payment (or shop, and divide it by the sq feet to come up with a price per sq foot. One pallet takes up about 16 sq ft of floor space. You know how many bags of the dusty stuff you can fit on the pallet. So, how long will you have to store it to equal its value? At that point you have broken even. Now how long will you store it until you need it...ah, now it may start costing you a little to have it around. That stuff is heavy, and not so easy to move around to make room for other projects. Just my 2 cents worth.

You could always take on a side job pouring a sidewalk and make a few extra bucks ----

Are you telling me that you would have turned down 25 free bag's of concrete?

I had thought that acceptance of the free concrete was a mote point. Weren’t we discussing the storage of the stuff? Or did I get a little dust in my ears?

I move house in November, so I might be a little more sensitive towards things without immediate purposes. I have been cleaning house left right and center!

You know the minute you do decide to get rid of the stuff -- THEN you are gonna need it!

Isn't that the way it usually goes? I did buy the shrink wrap and walked in circle's until the concrete was covered. ( got dizzy doing it) I realize that bagged concrete doesn't cost that much, but I just couldn't see it being thrown away weather I had the storage space or not. It will eventually come in handy, if not for for someone else. Thank's for the help.
