posted this question on the ranger forum, no help, anyone here able to assist?

94 4.0, it looks like a condensor, but I am guessing its nothing more than a noise suppressor. Anyhow took it to several parts houses and they could not tell me what I could change it out with. numbers are:
E87F18801-AA 648 it has a date code (020894). Not having a problem but since I had it off I would change as it is almost 20 years old!
any help with a new part/number would be appreciated.
