Hi there, ive just about had it with this auto, ive rebuilt both the transmission and the transfer case once before and now im back to driving the old ladies car as my truck sits with the tranny shot. i mean shot grinding randomly metal shrap in the fluid. popping out of gear the whole 9 yards plus 3 feet. i want a manual transmission. what should i go with? whats the price range for the swap and what do i need. im mechanically inclined and im not afraid to take a sazall if it means saving my sanity. i dont have an endless budget however im hoping to make it out of this under the price of a new e4od and bw1356 transfer case. Thanks for any and all help
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-zf5-swap.html Click on this link and have a read. You will need the stuff listed plus the ZF5 trans must be from behind a diesel and be 4x4 or have the trans mounted parking brake. Your transfer case should bolt up to the ZF5.
So I bought a 1996 ford f250 with the 7.3 powerstoke in it and it was an automatic with the E4od transmission and I'm wanting to swap it over to a zf5 manual. the biggest problems I'm running into it the little lip of the crank that centers the flywheel is bigger than the new flywheels opening its about 2 1/8 inches big and the one I got machined to fit the starter doesn't reach it, what would anyone recommend running? Anything will help thank you.
Best to start you own thread, this one is +12 years old.
Anyways, since we are all here, The automatic has a SPACER on the crank, the manual does not.
Remove the spacer, no need to get it machined, as the flywheel is centered with the bolts.

And, probably need a different starter, as they are probably different auto vs manual.
