Has anyone ever installed a temperature gauge on a Bronc. I have seen it done in tow rigs but never a regular truck. I recently blew my transmission and I think it was because it was overheated by an exhaust leak. If any body has done this or knows where I can get one please let me know. Thanks.
I've never installed them, but you can pick up multipurpose temperature guages at most retail parts houses. They'll have a sender unit that's threaded and has a nut, and you can install this in a low spot in the tranny pan.
I recently installed a tranny temp guage in my Bronco. I put it in an a-pillar guage pod. The install wasn't hard at all, just follow the instructions that come with the guage.
Whats a normal temp for a tranny anyways? also, Is there a kit for a tranny temp gauge somewhere or do you just have to build it from scratch and do it all yourself. I don't really trust myself drilling a hole into my tranny pan.
180-200 degrees. When you install the temp gauge sending unit in the transmission pan, also install a drain plug to make life easy
during trans fluid changes.
Brian, where did you get the pillar pods? Are the specifically for broncos, if not does it fit well? I would love to see pictures if you have them. thanks
I got the pillar pod from Summit. It's made by Auto Meter specifically for for '87-'96 F-series. VERY easy to install, they give good directions. It's black plastic, but can be painted to match interior color. You can get one or two guage pods, I've seen a three guage pod in a new SD truck.
I have a blue interior, but I left my pod black and I think that it looks fine. I've got a friend with a 2000 F250 SD PSD who has a two guage pod that he painted to match his tan interior, looks like it could have come from the factory that way.
I've got one on my 94. It was a piece of cake to install. I got everything from Summit Racing. I used a digital one and mounted it in the dash to the right of the speedo. Looks good there almost factory. As far as the sending unit goes the instructions that came with it said to mount it in the cooling line before the trans cooler(hot side) This way you know the max temp your fluid is hitting.
My temps usually run around 180 normal up around 200 when I tow my boat. Before I had the shift kit put in the trans it used to go as high as 225
I am installing a Perma-cool remote transmission filter and it has provisions for a sending unit on the top. They sell a complete (deluxe) kit with a sending unit and a gauge:
10677 Deluxe Kit:
Deluxe Kit (shown) features all items in the Standard Kit (P/N 10678) plus electric temperature gauge with mounting bracket, sending unit, electrical wire and hardware.
But I got the standard kit without the gauge because I wanted to get an Autometer gauge to match my oil press, and water temp.
10678 Standard Kit:
Kit features cast aluminum filter mount, Perma-Cool® oil filter, high-pressure/high-temperature transmission hose, brass fittings, stainless steel hose clamps, mounting hardware and illustrated multilingual instructions.
Here is the link to Perma-cools kit, I got mine from Summit Racing.
Excellent feedback. It sounds like the one I want is the Summit racing with the sending unit on the hot line.
Does anyone know if the remote filter is now a requirement from ford? They just upped the price of my new trans from 2600 to 2900 because they require the external filter for the warranty.
