Drain PS Pump?

I am going to replace the power steering pump on my 92 351W. I would also like to replace all the fluid. Is there a way to drain the system completely so I can replace that with all new fluid?

Thanks.

LOL yea I guess could call it "draining it", I took the hose off the cooler added to in into a pail, started it up allowing it to pump the fluid out.

The gear box, if you can remove the sector shaft without to much trouble, IE; have a puller? pretty quick and easy to lift the shaft out. All fluid falls out, also allows for ability flush housing out if found necessary.

I did it that way worked fine, did so because in a pinch I put power steering fluid in it (and without thinking about what I was doing first), can't stand the "squeal" when using PS fluid so when I returned home I drained it so I could refill with trans fluid again. I wanted all the PS fluid out, least little bit in there and the pump will make noise, much quieter with very small amount mixed in yea but silent if all AT fluid.

is that the black, rubber hose that attaches to the stainless steel hose? I don't know which way the fluid flows out of that, so I don't know which hose to disconnect.

Follow line back from the cooler to return port on the back of the pump, will be rubber line with hose clamp.

I took that one off then fired up the motor a minute allowing it to pump itself out.
Then took the return line off at the gear box, line out to cooler, used compressed air to blow cooler loop dry.

Then lift out sector shaft, easy to do once the pitman arm is off. Cleaned out the gear box while I was at it.
Then put it back together and the hoses back on except for the return line to the pump. Filled the pump to the brim keeping full allowing it to pump clean fluid through, couple quarts worth before putting the return line back on the back of the pump.

Being as I own a pitman arm puller I like to do it that way, clean out the gear box when have reason/opportunity do so. Especially that truck as it plows snow. Lots of maneuvering lock to lock between and around parked cars parking islands, buildings you name it the steering pump and gear box get a workout doing so. Don't wanna blow that sector shaft seal out!

If don't wanna do all that would be able to keep pouring it in from top with return line off the pump allowing it to pump to bucket, do so until flushed completely with fresh fluid, without removing sector shaft.

Work fast keeping it in fluid, eliminate / limit best ya can time pump runs dry, can't keep up? shut it off till had moment to re fill then start it again jug at ready to pour and keep up.
I know when I do something like that I'll have a helper sitting in seat, start and shut off truck as/if needed while I do the fluid thing under the hood.

Do I install the high pressure line with or without the black o -ring? The o -ring didn't come with this new hose but was on the temporary plug that was in the new pump I got.

i didnt have a puller or any tools at the time to remove any hoses...so i used a clean rag to soak up the fluid i could readily get to in the pump reservoir and after i got as much as i could get out i filled it up with trans fluid and most of the whining went away...but i would definetly do a flush next time around for piece of mind.
