"D'oh!"

Replaced an injector on 7.3 powerstroke today and was ready to button it up, then..... the 10mm socket I had just used to tighten glow plug fell in hole by injector. I had shop towels stuffed everywhere I though but I missed one lousy place(it was #7 so kind of a pain) then Murphy's law took over. I could see it for a minute with flashlight and mirror but it fell to who's knows where when I almost had it with my claws grapper. Now what? if I leave it will it block an oil port or more? If I can't leave it how much do I have to dissemble to get to it. I'm sure you pro's on this site get a few laugh's out us amateurs but I need help thanks

was it the hole on the bottom of the heads? i think there is where the oil goes back to the oil pan. i think it is there and should not harm a thing.

I had something fall in a pushrod home the other day. I fished it out with a magnet. Even if you can't see it get a magnet on a string or on of the extendable type and go fishing.

no, it's at the top, "v" shaped port that push rod passes through before entering cylinder head (for injector to right of the one I just replaced.)

So there's room for a deep 10MM socket to fall to oil pan? If true I hope it did, thanks, Charlie

If you are talking about the somewhat VEE shaped holes above the injector bores, then yes those are the holes where the pushrods are.

Personally I wouldn't like knowing. I would try to retrieve it with a magnet personally.

Had something similar happen to a different engine. I tried using the magnet on a string but I couldn't get much range of search down there so I bought and attached a strong little magnet to a piece of wire and kept changing the bend until I caught my fish. To keep it from sticking to the block I pushed a rubber cap I had onto the contact end, leaving enough magnet exposed to get the fish. Good luck.
