power steering ?'s

I just recently purchased a 1977 F250 4x2. When I got it home and was parking this beast the power steering quit or some how got really hard to turn. Like really hard. As I was manhandling the steering wheel the power steering fluid began leaking bad. I thought I had blown the high pressure hose so I replace it and the low hose as well. I filled the pump and started the truck. When I turned the wheel it was still difficult and fluid started spraying out the top of the gear box. Apparently this was the leak not the hoses. I ordered a new gearbox from Rockauto and will be here later next week. My question is, Is it possible something happened to the gearbox that would make it nearly impossible to turn? Never had one fail this way. I can't imagine the king pins or tierods would cause a no steer problem.
