Lately I've had a horrible squeaking noise while driving my 98 Explorer XLT. I thought it could be the squeal sensor on the rear brake pads. I had everything replaced both front and rear pads and rotors. I even did the emergency brake pads which had begun to fall apart. I figured this would have stopped the noise. it did for a couple of days but the squeak is back. Of course whenever I go to my mechanic the noise can't be heard.
Does anyone have any idea of what else it could be?
Universal joints comes to mind. When they dry out sometimes they squeek as you start off driving. As damage to the needle bearings progresses, it may turn into a rumble and vibration that increases with speed.

I also have a squeek that seems to come from the front end, passenger side. As the car increases speed, the squeek is faster. It squeeks on acceleration, on braking and when the car is rolling forward in neutral. When I'm braking it squeeks in "double time". This is on my 2000 Explorer Sport, 31,000 miles. I've been to the dealer twice, they hear the noise but can't seem to fix it. What should I ask them to look at next?

Ask them to look for a mechanic that knows what they're doing. I love that: They hear the noise but can't fix it. Typical dealer nonsense.
Maybe try a private garage that you trust. And search for TSB's that may have been issued on this subject.
I took the truck back to my Auto shop and my Mechanic said that the squeak comes from cheap brake pads. he said for some reason in ford trucks high performance or OEM Motorcraft brake pad sit correctly and don't have the squeking sound. I did have my brakes done once before and I dished out the $160 for all four brake pads and heard no squeaks. I'm going to try and deal with the noise for now but I think I will soon be changing them for the motorcraft brake pads. I'll let ya'll know how it turns out.
